I don't know a lot about custom suspension setups, so I'm asking more clueful people than me. Is the rear suspension on this gasser as sketchy as it looks to me?
It seems like with ladder bars that long and the springs just hanging out there that any big bump or decent wheel hop will let those springs pop out of their perches and cause the whole back end to collapse onto the axle.

Dafuq is holding those spring in there?

your assessment seems spot on to me. Plus its all rusted to ahit, how long before the springs pip through the floor? And no shocks of any kind? If they did this kind of suspension work I'd hate to see the engine bay

Marginal #RamblinBait, marginal due to the rust and cutting up a Futura thing. It'd be un-sketchy if he had shocks on it - as is, it is a bit sketchy but not terrible except for the bouncing risk thing.

Yes. This is a Strange rear end. It should have just bolted right in. You see these custom adapter brackets he's used to make it work. This thing is a Frankenstein of parts.

More concerned about the lack of dampers. Usually in a setup like that the shock prevents the suspension from drooping enough for the spring to pop out.
The general idea of a spring held in by a nub at each end has been in production forever, and is common on trailing arm suspensions. BMW is a fan of the setup.

You don't want to see the engine bay, trust me. He cut the shock towers out and didn't replace them, so there's a giant square hole on each side. He built the straight axle setup to his front rails, but there's not that much to keep those rails where they're supposed to be - that's the job of the (now fucked) fender liner and shock tower.
As to whether the springs pop through, the subframe rails on these are actually zinc'ed, so it's down to how shitty a welder he was with the custom brackets. Plus, the floor in back is actually very solid given some of the rest of it.

Those are the right spring mounts. They look like they're going to fall out because the car has no engine or transmission, so the car is much lighter and not compressing the suspension.

Ok, here's my not-quite-expert analysis.
The car is sitting so high because it's basically a body and chassis with no engine or transmission. Not enough weight to compress the suspension. Also there aren't any shocks, which if they were on the car would help keep the springs compressed.
The craigslist ad mentions a coilover conversion, which the springs are mounted in the right place for, but I don't see any shocks. The shocks should be inside of the springs.
The ad also mentions ladder bars, which are those tubular things mounted to the front of each side of the axle. They're basically upgraded trailing arms.
That link mounted to the thing coming off the top of the differential pumpkin could be some kind of an attempt at a panhard rod, but usually that's not the place where you link a panhard rod to.

But all that weight will be in the front.

The lack of shocks probably also has something to do with it. Normally the shocks will keep the springs at least somewhat compressed, but there aren't any shocks.

I full tank of gas would help add some compression.

I wonder if it has a gas tank at the moment.

I think it would co habit the space with some of the rear suspension normally so I'm going with no.

Actually, the tank on a Falcon is well clear of the rear axle to the back. Probably still fits.

The axle is fully located by the leading arms and panhard rod, so theoretically the springs will only see compression force, straight up and down... it's also missing shock absorbers as far as I can tell, which would help... it looks like its designed to be a coil-over setup and is missing the shocks, as if it's just been mocked up so that it could be rolled around the shop/yard etc. But, yeah, as it stands I wouldn't want to go driving it around like that...

It would be helpful to see the front attachment, but it looks like a pretty straight up drag racing 2 link setup. You make the arms long enough to mount near the transmission crossmember so that pinion climb pushes up against the center of gravity. Works really well for drag racing, just takes up a bunch of space. Hence, gasser.
